The Best Hotels in Phuket

Update 2012 - I have now published an updated Top 10 list :

Top 10 Hotels in Phuket 2012

For Phuket hotel booking and more information, I heartily recommend Agoda.com. Look there first!

A couple of years ago I blogged the Top 10 Hotels in Phuket, the list being based on TripAdvisor ratings, which on average (if there are plenty of ratings) give a good idea of quality. Sure there may be occasional odd reviews - some sound like advertising and you hear rumours that some reviews may be written by people connected with a hotel, or by competitors, but if there are enough reviews I think you can see through the fog and figure out what are the best hotels in Phuket. This is an updated 2011 Top 10 list to give an idea of some of the best hotels in Phuket.

For each hotel below there are links for online reservations/rates and availability - I recommend Agoda.com if you want to book a hotel in Phuket. Some of the hotels are not listed on Agoda and I have listed an alternate booking link. The review links below are also from Agoda where possible - only people who have booked the hotels through Agoda can make a review, and if you take a look, you'll see honest reviews, good and bad, plus points and minus points - a very useful tool for checking for your ideal hotel. I would base the list on the Agoda reviews but the site does not seem to rank hotels in the same way as TripAdvisor, although each hotel does get a rating based on sometimes hundreds of reviews. Here's the top 10 ...

Top 10 Phuket Hotels 2011

1. Andara Resort and Villas (Kamala Beach)

Andara

A new 5 star resort, found overlooking Kamala Beach with luxury villas and a fancy restaurant called "Silk". This is a place to relax and be pampered. All villas have private pools.. Note that the resort is not right on the beach but there is a shuttle to the private Beach Club.

2. Boomerang Village (Kata / Karon Beach)

Boomerang Village

I reviewed Boomerang Village on the blog in 2009 - it was not in the original top 10 in 2008 but certainly is now, and its quite different to some other hotels - on the hillside behind Kata and Beaches, not on the beach at all, but obviously very popular!

3. Indigo Pearl (Nai Yang Beach)

Indigo Pearl

I wrote about Indigo Pearl in 2008 and it was already in the top 10 list back then - it's a top class resort and has a very original look and feel with decor based on the old Phuket tin mining industry. It may not be to everyone's liking, but it's got class and it's not afraid to be different!

4. Mom Tri's Villa Royale (Kata Noi Beach)

Villa Royale

Mom Tri is one of Phuket's innovators. The Villa Royale was built on land which used to be his home, on the headland overlooking Kata Noi beach. A stairway from the hotel takes you down to the water. Great views from the rooms and restaurant too. It's got that bit of class, only has about 30 rooms/suites and is often full!

5. Sri Panwa (Cape Panwa)

Sri Panwa

Cape Panwa is one of our favourite areas of Phuket away from the crowds. The last top 10 list included Cape Panwa Hotel... this time you have Sri Panwa which is a newer resort, with about 50 luxury pool villas - some facing west, some facing east over the sea. Great views, just do note that Panwa is a little out of the way, suitable if you want peace and quiet.

6. Palmview Resort / Guesthouse (Patong)

Palmview

I'd not heard of this one ... And quite surprised to see a hotel on Nanai Road in the top 10 list! Actually it's more like a guesthouse with a pool. Only 20 rooms. Nanai road is the back road in Patong, quite a long way from the beach. You're in the hills away from the crowds. Lots of small hotels here and lots of restaurants including my favourite pizza!

7. Paresa (Kamala Beach)

Paresa

Paresa Resort is located just outside Kamala on the road that winds around the southern headland, sometimes called Millionaires Mile. Great sea views, but do note that the resort is not on the beach - it hangs over the "Kamala Cliffs". I think I'd be happy to sit there all day in my private pool away from the worries of the world. A place like this is a real getaway.

8. Holiday Inn (Patong)

Holiday Inn

Much as I dislike Patong, there are some very good hotels and resorts to be found. Holiday Inn has been there for years, since before I arrived here in 1999, though it's had new wings built onto it since then. Surprising to see an "old" hotel in the Top 10? Well, that to me means they obviously have great service. Seems to be especially popular with families - I would not stay here if I was looking for a romantic couples hotel.

9. Avista Resort (Kata Beach)

Avista Resort

Avista only opened at the end of 2009. I remember going with some customers who thought it was great. It's on the hill just at the north end of Kata Beach and built in what they call a modern style (i.e. it does not look like an old Thai temple!). Reviews good and only seem to worry about the hill you have to walk up to get back to the hotel from the beach.

10. Pacific Club Resort

Pacific Club

Located on the hillside overlooking Karon Beach, Pacific Club's owner Eric is a chef and also owner of the Karon Cafe in the center of Karon. It's a small resort with a personal feel and panoramic views over sea and hills. It's up a small side road, away from the main road and yet only about 10 minutes walk to Karon Beach. Ideal for those wanting seclusion, but still easy access to the main beach centers. Was also in the 2008 Top 10, so obviously has some lasting appeal.

Agree with the top 10? Stayed somewhere else that you thought was better? Do add a comment below. You'll notice that many of these are top end resorts, 5 star, many are on more secluded beaches and many of them (like Andara or Avista) are new resorts that have only been open a year or two. There are new luxury resorts opening every year all over the island like the Westin Siray Bay or Renaissance Mai Khao Beach that have opened recently. Phuket IS trying to push the luxury lifestyle, and it's often said that Thailand does luxury very well.

I put Phuket hotel reviews on this blog now and then. Hotels chosen due to reputation or good reviews or because they offer something different. Hope it helps people to make a decision. For hotel bookings, I recommend looking at Agoda. I want to write something else on the blog about "reviews" in general, as when I look at Agoda or TripAdvisor I see recurring themes, small complaints about breakfasts or expensive food (in a 5 star resort.. no, you think?) or location being too far from something or other.... and the top 10 on TripAdvisor keeps changing! Anyway.. all the hotels listed here have enough reviews to keep you reading for hours!

Hey Jamie.
Found tyour blog by accident and it is brillant.Hoping to visit Phuket this May so I am wondering what hotel we should stay in.We are looking to have a sea-view with maybe our own pool or jacuzzi?

Blogger Jamie Monk in Phuket said...

Seaview with own pool - so you are looking for a NICE place to stay ... some of the hotels on this page have just what you need such as Sri Panwa and Andara - One things I should mention if you want to stay at a place like these, it's a very good idea to rent a car, having your own transport in Phuket is the best way to get around.

Hi Jamie,
Thanks for this website, it's given me lots of ideas. I need to go to Phuket in October for my niece's wedding. I am South African living in France and have to travel alone as our holidays are in August (husband must stay to pay!). The wedding is in Kata and I'd like to stay somewhere nice ££ but not NICE ££££ and where I will be safe on my own. Can you recommend for me? Confused with Trip Advisor but Boomerang or Kata Palm seem okay. Thanks, Debbie

Blogger Jamie Monk in Phuket said...

Hi Debbie

Thanks for dropping by! Boomerang is a special kind of place - you don't normally see non-beachfront hotels in Phuket with such great comments - it's a good 15 minute walk to the beach and its up a hill on a quiet road.. single lady may feel better somewhere a tiny bit busier. Kata Palm Resort is much nearer to the beach, plenty of peple around, lots of dining options nearby. Where's the wedding being held?

March 11, 2011
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Hi Jamie, thanks for your reply. The wedding is being held at Katathani which doesn't appeal to me based on reviews and £££. Rather have good value for money and a bit of luxury and Kata Palm seems to offer that. If I book the hotel and flight separately, how do you recommend getting from airport to hotel? Do you recommend a taxi company that I can book online? Can you recommend somewhere for a massage not a "massage" ?Thanks again, Debbie

March 11, 2011
Blogger Jamie Monk in Phuket said...

Ah well, if you stay at Kata Palm you're pretty close to Katathani. The Kata Palm I am sure has a spa and massage - a massage in a resort IS a massage. Oddly enough I am not into massages. The last time I went was a couple of years ago with my wife to the Royal Spa in Phuket Town - the same company has branches in many hotels too.

Airport to Kata Beach - at the airport you can get a limo service for about 750 Baht to Kata, or there are cheaper Meter Taxis which normally come to about 550 Baht. Also shared minibuses - not recommended.

Kata Palm Resort can be booked at Agoda, which I recommend for Phuket Hotels. Any questions you can also email me at jamie@jamiesphuket.com :)

Hi Jamie,

I am travelling solo to Phuket and planning to spend 5 days. Please can you recommend a nice hostel/hotel that is central, so that I can get a bit of the night life - but also within a short bus ride/walk to the beach. Thanks Judy

I can't believe the Banyan Tree Phuket is not on there. It's been around a while but they've opened newer villas (fabulous double-pool villas) and their service is still the one to beat! This resort is the one that set the standard for 'spa resort' & 'pool villa resort' that all of these newer resorts are aiming to match.

March 15, 2011
Blogger Jamie Monk in Phuket said...

Hi Lana,

Well for sure Banyan Tree is superb... the list here was based on TripAdvisor on that day. TripAdvisor often gets oddities suddenly entering the top 10 due to several "exceptional" reviews, or a great hotel can drop 30 places due to a single bad review. I don't think a hotel like Banyan Tree is too worried about that. It's in the Conde Nast Gold List 2011.. it's more of a Conde Nast hotel than a TripAdvisor hotel if you know what I mean. :)

hi

i m planning to visit thailand in may. Will be staying in bangkok for a night and was planning phuket for 4 nights. some friends have also mentioned koh sumai. what will you recommend between phuket and sumai. coming for my honeymoon but wouldnt like a very secluded place where there is nothing to do. i like water sports etc. does it rain a lot in may?

March 19, 2011
Blogger Jamie Monk in Phuket said...

Hi Vicky,

May is a tricky month, just when the seasons change. It can be very nice weather, can be wet, and it's the same in Koh Samui - one of the wettest months of the year if you look at rain averages for Phuket and Samui. So - come to Phuket! Lots to do whatever the weather. I normally take some holidays in early May at the end of the high season, and the weather never stops us having fun!

Hi Jamie,
Great page you have set up here,
We just booked to come over on the 12th June to the 24th June.
Going to book 8 nights at The Nap Patong. Then thinking of heading toward the andaman white beach resort for 4 nights. I realise this resort is secluded which is nice. However, is it too secluded? Will we be able to find a place to walk to near by for dinner etc?

Hi Jamie
I found your blog by accident and am glad I did! Lots of useful information. Maybe you can give some advice - we will be spending only 3 nights in Phuket as a stopover in September this year. I have read September is monsoon season, is it raining heaps? Also not sure where to stay, we are a family with 2 small children so not keen on hustle and bustle but would like to be central so it's easy enough to get around with the kids. Do you think Patong is quiet enough that time of the year? Otherwise I was looking at Surin or Bang Tao... what do you think? Any hotel recommendations especially for travelling with children? Thanks heaps

Hi Jamie
Great site you've got! I've been researching Phuket (although this is the 20th time or so I'm going) because I'm going with my kids and my sister's kids... which changes everything... I'm finding it hard to assess hotels that are kid-friendly. Your top 10 list, unfortunately, has a fair number of hotels not near the beach - not an option if you're with toddlers. Same problem with Trip Advisor. I'm looking at Kata, because I think that's family-friendly, with beachfront hotels, but we're stil looking for something pretty and not too noisy, so Katathani is out. Am I looking in the right place and got any suggestions?

June 11, 2011
Blogger Jamie Monk in Phuket said...

Hi Angelo - difficult in Phuket to get that villa on a private beach experience unless you want to pay lots of money. For surfing - Kata Beach is the best - see Kata Beach Hotels - but no villas on the sand ... Maybe try Mom Tri's Villa Royale - at Kata Noi beach - villas overlooking the sea and a short walk down a path to the beach.

Hi Preeti,

If you want to be in a busy place, Patong works .. but the Centara Sawaddi Patong - is that the one you are looking at?.. this is a small hotel a long way from the beach. Better try the Centara Karon Beach Resort - nice place and just a couple of minutes walk to Karon Beach.

between going to an average hotel in patong & enjoying the daily amazing trips around phuket OR going to a better place in Laguna for ex & discard some of the trips not to explode the budget ..

what do you think ??

Hi Jamie,

Great page - Thankyou! My partner and I are spending some time in Japan mid october. We are trying to decide whether to stop by Phuket or Langkawi/Pulau Kapas for 3/4 nights on the way home. Any suggestions? What is the weather like in Phuket in October? Also...given we will only be there for 3 or four nights do you have any recommendations of where to stay? I don't want to stay in the heart of Patong.

Thankyou

Hi Michelle,

October - weather is hit and miss, you might get lovely weather or it might rain a lot. On average, the wettest month of the year :)

I'd also not stay in Patong, but fortunately Patong only occupies about 2% of Phuket Island. Best hotels? You're on the right page right here! More suggestions at My Phuket Hotel Recommendations - and for booking, I do suggest you check the rates at Agoda.com. Happy Travels!

Hi Jamie,

travelling next week and looking desperately for a nice thai style hotel, if that makes sense! want something that looks exotic and not your typical holiday complex you can get on a package holiday, any recommendations. I know its cheap season but some prices seem excessively low, and then coupled with mixed trip advisor reviews im so confused!

ive been to phuket before stayed in bang tao beach, but found it so quiet and spent a fortune on taxis each nite to patong. what is patong like to stay in? or is it better to stay on the outskirts then go in at night?

any help would be fantastic, thanks so much!

Hello to Jamie from Finland!
I have been in Phuket with my husband in march 2010 and march 2011. Both times we stayed in Access pool resort & spa and we loved it! And next march we are coming back :)
Access pool r&s is the best hotell for us. It is a hotell for adults who wants to enjoy their holiday in peace. And the pool area.... I think that is the reason that we are coming back year after year :)

Hi Marc,

No.. I don't have a top 10 low budget list, although I did write something a few years ago about Cheap Places to stay in Phuket. I think the best resource for lower budget accommodation is probably Travelfish.

In high season it's harder to get nice places for 1000 Baht. In low season (May - October) you can get some real bargains for 1000 - 1500 Baht.

Hi Jamie, fantastic blog. We'll be Phuket at beginning of April for 5 nights to celebrate our 20th anniversary and wondered where to stay, wanted to make it a bit special without having to remortgage. We like quieter, on the beach places, but close enough to head out for drink in the evening. Liked the look of Cape Panwa, what do you think? Do the nicer hotels have promo's that time of the year? Any recommendations welcome. Thanks

January 01, 2012
Blogger Jamie Monk in Phuket said...

I'd say the Cape Panwa Hotel is a good choice - lovely area, well away from the crowds - head into Phuket Town in the evenings, you can honestly avoid Patong. Look for a guy called Tim who works at Cape Panwa Hotel, he's got a lot of Phuket knowledge.

Hi Jamie,

Just stumbled onto your blog. My fiancé and I are traveling to Thailand in the middle of March (Honeymoon). We are looking for a hotel (price range ~$200 USD a night) that is near a beach that feels secluded, but also near shopping and night life. What are your recommendations and also what are the best ways of getting around?

On a slightly different note, we have a family friend that went to a time share meeting at one of the hotels and were given two free nights stay. Have you heard of this before and what is the best way to contact them (we live in the United States)?

Thanks!

Blogger Jamie Monk in Phuket said...

This is the "fantasy" beach - secluded, but near shopping and nightlife. Most shopping and nightlife is found in Patong, or major malls near Phuket Town. Also some other nightlife around, I mean just bars and such in Kata, Karon, Surin Beach and a different nightlife in Phuket Town. Patong is not secluded. Kata can feel secluded on the beach since there's no busy beach road. Kata to Patong, 15 minutes by tuk tuk/taxi. Kamala beach certainly more secluded, worth a look at hotels there too. Start with:

Kata Beach Hotels and
Kamala Beach Hotels

hi jamie, found your blog n loving it
my husband and i are planning for anniversary trip to phuket in april. looking for a place to stay. not really into nitelife in Patong but dont mind browsing the area for the afternoon, feel the crowd and do some culinary activities. thinking to stay around karon-kata. love the concept of pacific club or boomerang, love the rate, not too big, nice ambience, nice pools. but are there similar like that closer to the beach? we dont really mind the minds their up hills location, but we're afraid we might get too comfy in a hotel like those that we never get out to explore the whole phuket *grin*. any suggestion?

any suggestion also on regular big hotel/resorts with nice pools not too many children with price of 3000 baths at tops? if not in karon kata, maybe patong is ok

thanks so much for the advice jamie.

hi jamie,
yes i've read your list of recommended hotel in karon kata already, but havent quite found similar concept of pacific club/boomerang/sawasdee but closer to the beach, or many restaurants as mention on my last question. mostly they're uphills. anyway thank you

January 08, 2012
Blogger Jamie Monk in Phuket said...

But the "concept" of a place like Boomerang IS that the hotel is on the hillside, away from the crowds. There are certainly hotels closer to the beach of course like Aspasia, Avista, Mom Tri's Villa Royale, Marina Phuket. Seems you like the idea of being away from the busy area, but also close to it?? Those above mentioned might be worth looking at....

January 08, 2012
Blogger acidrr said...

well i wouldnt mind browsing the busy area for a day, but not sure if for the whole stay. i would like easy access to it because me and my husband would love to just walk out the door and and try out local food especially from the street vendors, because i think they're much more yummy than hotel food. am i right? :) but then would want to always come to a peace n quite place to relax. considering the uphills, i guess it usually needs more cost for transportation isnt? anyway, Aspasia looks interesting. thanks again jamie, still using your blog as a guide to plan our trip :)

Thanks for a swift reply.

Do you know any beachfront two bedroom pool villas, that is actually on the beach? I had a look on the villas at Banyan Tree, an the floorplan on the Deluxe two bedroom villas showed the beach right in front of the villa, but when i searched google maps it did not look like it was at the beach.
Do you know if it is ? or do you know any other places that has a location like that?

Thanks again !

Hi Kap,

Not 100% sure, but I think the villas at Banyan Tree are not beachfront, they are around the lagoons, very close to the beach but not ON the beach.
