Pizza at the Thai-Italy Restaurant in Patong
I do like a bit of pizza now and then. Yes, I know this is Thailand, and I assure you that Thai food is my main diet, but this is Phuket, a great gathering place for tourists and expats from all over the world, and you can find just about any food you want here. I am not an Italian food expert, but have been a couple of times to Italy, where a friend used to live on a small farm in Tuscany, and food was always fresh and plentiful, much of it being grown or made at the farm - breads, cheeses, vegetables, local wine, olive oil on everything, and they had a pizza oven too where we could cook our own pizza. Thin, crispy and fresh from the forno. Perfecto.
Although not an Italian food guru, I would say I am a pizza snob :) I am sorry, but "Chicago Style" with half a loaf of bread as the base? Oh dear. No, I'm a thin and crispy guy. Got to be fresh, got to be made in a proper pizza oven. Phuket has quite a lot of Italian restaurants, quite a lot of Italian expats, and friends tell me of favourite places for pizza, so we might try some others sometime, only my wife does not eat pizza, and (for our pocket) dining out at a more touristy restaurant can be a bit expensive.
The "Thai-Italy" restaurant is one of the few restaurants I would visit in Patong, being that Patong is not our kind of place. Thai-Italy is on Nanai Road (the back road) - coming from Karon Beach, turn onto Nanai road, over the slight hill, past the right turn that heads uphill (Hasip Pee Road), and on another 500m to the Mae Ubon Market on the left side - it's in there. Easy to see.
It's not a big place, my friend Diego says it's really like a little local restaurant just like you'd find in a small Italian town. It's well known among expats, and most of the customers tend to be Italian, which is a good sign if you are looking for a good pizza or proper just-like-mama-makes-it pasta. The restaurant is normally only open in the evenings. We (the family) met Diego and family and a few more friends for dinner last Friday. Pizza was the top choice, but the menu has something like 4 pages of pasta options too. Prices very reasonable for this kind of food - my pizza diavola was 170 Baht. First to be served was Diego's Mama. If Mama likes the food, I can assure you, it's got to be good.

The pizza is of course properly cooked - thin and crispy - those are the keywords. The Thai/Italian chef team prepare and cook all night...

And then the pizzas started coming in thick and fast. Does not take long to cook in a proper wood fired forno. Excuse me while I post some photos of pizza! You can see that these are for people with a healthy appetite. The calzone is about a foot long. The pizzas about the same. One pizza could serve 2 people, were those people smaller than myself...

All washed down with a few cold beers of course! And then coffee - I remember one time being in this restaurant, and an American customer ordered coffee. So, they brought him an Italian coffee, just like the one below that we had after our meal. American guy not impressed by tiny cup. He was all, hey what's this? It's coffee sir, real coffee. No, he wanted a cup of coffee, a big ol' cup of Americano.. Sorry, wrong place, this is little Italy, to order a Nescafe would be an insult!

And the coffee was followed by a Sambuca, and then a Limoncello.. I turned down the Grappa (my belly does not like really strong alcohol). Ah, perfecto, full of pizza, a little buzz in the head from the sambuca, I do indeed like a bit of Italian. The Thai-Italy is busy every evening thanks to "word of mouth" advertising. No webpage, no mentions in guidebooks, but good food! Oh, just a note - it's closed on Mondays.

Excellent post Jamie, there are alssoplenty of Western restaurants on Samui and it's almost a shame not to visit (some of) them.
My main diet is nowadays a mix between Thai and Western food or should I say non Thai food, since is Middle Eastern or Indian considered Western food?
This place looks awesome though and next time in Phuket I will visit and maybe we can share a beer together, at alst, over a good pizza!
Absolutely, next time you are heading to Phuket, let me know!
Just found your blog via a friend (I'm guessing accidently, as she doesn't blog!!) We are planning a holiday to Karon at the end of the year so I shall watch your posts with much interest!!! Those pizza look like proper Italian pizzas!!! Having spent every summer for the last 30 odd years in Italy - I can spot a good one!!! We'll give it a go (should we get fed up of Thai food!!). Thank you for the great info!!
xxxx
Hi Angel,
Thanks for visiting. An Italian restaurant that has loyal Italian customers - that's the key. This place is not a tourist trap, it's off the main drag. If Mama says the food is good, I am not arguing!
Hey Jamie,
I'm interested in commissioning a travel article but can't find contact details. How can I contact you directly?

Hey Jamie! Thank-you for recommending this restaurant to us today!
We went there around 730pm and every single customer there (except for us) was Italian.
We ordered the following (total bill came to 1400 BHT)
Drinks:
1 beer, 4 Pepsi, and 2 bottled water
Appetizers:
Roast Beef (like beef carpaccio), tomato salad, and seafood soup (their seafood soup is more like a meal than a appetizer), and bruschetta.
Pizza:
1. Prosciutto ham, mushroom, and onions
2. Ham and cheese
Dessert:
2 slices of homemade Apple cake with mango sauce
2 Italian coffee
Dinner was great. The 4 of us were really stuffed and actually didn't finish all the slices of pizza.
Thanks again for another local suggestion! As usual, we love getting away from the tourist restaurants. :-)
Excellent Shockr! I hope you took the leftover pizza home, put it in the fridge and ate it cold for breakfast :)
Our trip this year is coming to an end on Sunday morning.
We've gone to Laem Hin way too many times this time around so we decided to hit up Thai-Italy again. My girlfriend was craving pasta today after eating Phad Thai at the local Kata street side restaurant you recommended on this blog (we went there last year also!).
This time we ordered the following:
Insalata Caprese - The mozzarella wasn't buffalo mozzarella and the basil was dried flakes. I asked the owner and he said that is the way they make it. I therefore don't recommend others ordering this dish.
Fettucini in a Mushroom Cream sauce - Wow, this was awesome. I think they made the fettucini from scratch. It was a really nice dish.
Margherita Pizza - the thin crust pizzas are awesome here. It's the only type of pizza we like to eat.
Tiramisu - home made and really delicious.
Espresso - tasted great.
This time around we finished everything. :-) The question now, is where to eat tomorrow before we fly off on Sunday morning!
Agree on the thin crust pizzas and tiramisu and espresso! Not sure they make their own fettucini but there is an Italian guy who makes fresh pasta in Kathu.. maybe they get it from him. Shut up, you are making me hungry!
Tried going there for lunch today but it was closed. :-( Drove 30 mins to Patong for nothing! LOL
Not normally open for lunch - it says above in the text "The restaurant is normally only open in the evenings." - more specifically, after about 6:30pm
Fantastic blog and of great benefit.
However Thai Italy dished up the worst pizza and pasta I've ever had. I wouldn't eat their again if they were giving it away. Friendly service though.
I believe there is a restaurant called SanMarco or Marco Polo near McDonalds at Patong Beach which served outstanding wood fired pizza.
I went back again in the evening last week. Unfortunately I wasted my time again... they pizza chef was on vacation for a week. The guy running the place did all the cooking himself, which ended up not being so tasty this time.
Instead of going back to Thai Italy again, we focused on going to M&M Pizzeria. It was a little hard to find, but at least their pastas tasted better and they had decent pizza.
M&M's calzone was really good but don't order their Pesto pizza. That was waaaaay too soggy for my liking.
I guess I'm going to have to find another pizza restaurant next time I come to Phuket.
I'll give you the benefit of the doubt, but I have Italian friends here in Phuket who swear by Thai-Italy.. in most web-based circles, anonymous posters who say one place is the worst and another is outstanding are somewhat suspicious! Did you eat at the restaurant whose name you can't remember even though it was so good?.. you say "I believe there is a restaurant ..." which suggests that you have not eaten there. I don't know if you are Italian or a pizza expert ( I am not) but the Italians I know tell me that Thai-Italy is the real deal for proper Italian food.
Disclaimer - not been there for a year... don't go to Patong unless I have to.
Shockr - That's a problem with a small restaurant .. if the chef takes a holiday... The one pizza place I want to try next is Capannina in Kata, people tell me that one is very good. Not cheap, but maybe I can sacrifice some money for the sake of the blog!
I'll try Capannina the next time we're in town.
Btw, we came looking for you last week Sunday (the 5th) but your partner said you were sick or out for the day. Just wanted to stop by and say hello since we were in the area eating at the local phad thai restaurant.
It's too bad about the pizza at Thai Italy... it's one of the very few reasons why we trek over to Patong.
Every time we go to Patong I end up feeling really "dirty" after we leave. It feels so sleazy there I don't know why anyone likes that area... ok, maybe dirty old men we see hanging around Bangla Road.
Other than Thai Italy and Carrefour, I can't think of any other reason why we would go to Patong. Any suggestions?
Hey.. yes I was sick that Sunday, normally I am away from the dive shop only on Saturday.
Patong.. I don't go. I did eat a very very nice dinner one time at the 9th Floor... we might go to Paradise Beach now and then, only in low season when its a bit quieter.

Hi Jamie,
I am planning a trip to Phuket during next year May. May I know why you don't usually go Patong? I was told by my friend Patong is nice and convenient for everything. She suggested me to stay Aspery as she said the hotel is nice and price is reasonable.
Besides, I am keen to know the closing time of Thai-Italy. Would like to try it for the first night when we arrived but it is a late arrival. Hence, I would like to know whether we can have our late dinner there.
Hi Joey,
Well I normally don't go to Patong because it's very touristy, crowded, and restaurants are on the whole not sensibly priced especially nearer the beach. There are, or may be exceptions, but in any case, we have plenty of favourite restaurants in other parts of the island. For tourists, the fact that you have everything close at hand is nice, but really Patong is not typical of Phuket island.
Not sure on closing time for Thai-Italy. I'd guess they close when everyone has gone home! I'd not bother trying after about 11pm, but if you do stay in Patong you will find food and drink after midnight easily.
Wow! Love the foods. Thanks for sharing this to us and keep posting!
The Restaurant has a new Owner. Went there yesterday and it was terrible. Atmosphere: Like a bus station or a toilet. Service: Horrible, 3 old sweating smelling italian guys eventually showed up after 20min and 2 complaints. Food: Pizza! Not available, he tried to explain me that he does not have more wood to heat the oven. We ate pasta and fish. Thank you for the worst pasta experience in my life. Even frozen microwavr pasta is better.
If you not want to eat shitty food at a sweat stinking bus/train station... DON'T go there anymore!
Hi Anonymous - I just checked with an Italian friend who agrees, it's shit now and he recommends Agli Amici restaurant in Chalong.
