Katathani Resort (Kata Noi Beach)
Well, I was just over at Kata Noi Beach a couple of weeks ago. Kata Noi always was quiet, and still is quiet because there is no through road, so somehow the beach seems like a sleepy backwater even though the rather large Katathani occupies most of the area!
The resort has nearly 500 rooms and is divided into different wings spread along the beach and the very quiet road along the beachfront. The resort does not own the beach exactly, but I saw plenty of signs on the land fronting the beach saying "Katathani Hotel Guests Only". I guess the beach gets some day visitors, but if you are staying there it's almost a private beach. Kata Noi is pretty. You can see Koh Pu, the little island off Kata beach and you have rocky/jungly headlands at either end.
Katathani gets lots of rave reviews which is a good sign (that's reviews by people who have stayed there). Location is great, and you're not so isolated, even if you have that feeling of seclusion. Aside from the resort restaurants (5 of them I think), there are some other places to eat in Kata Noi, and Kata beach is only a few minutes drive away, or a 15 minute hike over the hill. And for all that, I do recommend thee!

Hi Jamie,
I'm thinking about moving to Phuket for 3-6 months starting January 2009. Me and my boyfriend are fed up with Finland and all the stress :=) Do you think we'll be able to rent a reasonable apartment with internet connection for about 10000-20000 Bahts? Will we be able to live on 1000 Euros a month? I know it'll be high season :=(
Your blog is really helpful, thanks!
Yes for sure you can rent a place in that price range - I suggest maybe you contact a rental agency - Siam Real Estate.
1000 Euro = 50,000 Baht per month is OK, but yuo will not be eating out at all the fancy restaurants every night!
Thank you for answering so soon. It is much appreciated.
We might like to eat at better places maybe once a week and usually use restaurants for locals or cook our own food.
I think we'll first live in a cheap hotel and look around to get the idea about what area we like and then check the available rental properties.
hello
i will be traveling to phuket in sep (16-22). with all the hotels im very confused. but with help of your blog it looks like i want to stay at patong or karon beach. im also scheduling a couple of fishing trips that leave from chalong i think ?. do you think i should wait and try to use late stay or go ahead and reserve now ?? any refernces on fishing chaters ??

Hi Don,
Well, Patong is the busiest, most overdeveloped beach in Phuket, great if you want bars, McD's and Starbucks etc... Karon is way quieter, has lots of resorts along the beach road and only 10 - 15 minutes (300 Baht normal fare) in a tuk tuk to Patong for that night out.

Hi Jamie,
we are 4 friends visiting Phuket for New Year's eve holidays and we are trying to figure out how big are the distances on the island. For example if we stay in Bang Tao Beach how far is it to go to Patong Beach for dinner?
Your bolg is fantastic and very helpful.
Thanks a lot for your help!
Mary
Hi Mary,
Phuket is bigger than people realise. it's around 50km north to south and covers an area of over 500 square km. Bang Tao to Patong will take about 40 minutes I'd say - head along the coast via Surin, Kamala and into Patong is a nice drive if you head out before dark. Road is not fast, quite twisty.
Hi Jamie
thanks for a really informative, useful blog. We are visiting Thailand for the 3rd time and staying in Kata over Christmas / New Year. It will be my partner Rob, myself and 1 year old Liam. Do you know how long the trip to Coral Island is and do you think we could do it with a tot?? Do you leave from Chalong/ Rawai?? We have done Phi Phi etc but thought Coral for snorkelling would be good. thanks a stack,Kirsty, Knysna, South Africa
Hi Kirsty
Coral island is just a few minutes by speedboat, I am sure a little kid will love it. Most trips depart from Chalong, some from Rawai. You can book a trip with Easy Day Thailand. Have fun!
Hi Jamie
Thanks for your blog...there seems to be so much information that it seems quite overwhelming..A question...travelling to Phuket for a girlfriends 50th birthday. Looking for great resort on a lovely beach. We all (4 of us...all ladies) love to swim in the sea. would love to have daily beach massages and head up the beach for dinner and lunch. Will travel into Patong for the obligatory shop, and will probably take in night markets (walking streets like Koh Samui)....Any ideas. This is a special occasion so we want to get it right! A suite hotel/apartments/villas would be perfect!
Hi Jan, So you need a fairly busy beach if it's to have masseuses and restaurant choices. Night markets - there is a big weekend market on Saturday and Sunday outside Phuket City - see Phuket Weekend Market. Kata Beach sounds about right for you, but villas/apartments right by the beach.. difficult. Start with Kata Beach Hotels - some suggestions ....
