Rawai Beach

Near Rawai is a little gem of a beach called Laem Ka, at least it can be nice if the water is calm. On Sunday we stopped for a little look at Laem Ka Noi, down a kilometer long, narrow, bumpy road, and just as hard to find as Laem Ka! Not as pretty, but it seems there is a restaurant there, and it is certainly off the beaten track.

Aside from the restaurants you can find multitudes of boats at Rawai - you can rent boats here to Koh Lone, Koh He (Coral Island), Racha Yai and more. We do intend to check out Koh Lone one day, and I think the boats here will take people round to Koh Kaew too - a small island off Phromthep Cape with a golden Buddha on the beach.

At the far east end of the beach you find a little fishing community with a daily market selling fresh fish and prawns. There are also some "touristy" stalls selling shells and other such souvenirs of the sea. The market is small but gives an idea of the old way of life. Phuket still has many fishing communities around the coast despite the tourism that has taken over many of the western beaches. We bought some fish and I took a few photos.

The Southwest corner of Phuket is great for small beaches, views, seafood and a bit of peace and quiet. You can visit Rawai, eat at Kan Eang Seafood in Chalong, get the view at Phromthep, stop at Ya Nui beach.. get the sunset at the Kata Viewpoint. If you get the idea - it's a nice area of Phuket!

Nice photos Jamie! Phuket seems to be really a paradise for people who loves soaking under the sun. I just want to know, what's the most affordable resort in Phuket that you can recommend? I'm a budget-conscious traveler, will greatly appreciate your help. thanks...
Hi Jamie,
Loved Rawai when I visited Phuket a year ago with the family, it was a nice and quiet part of the island.
Hello :) Sa Wat Dee Kaa!!
I Like yours so much

Hi Nikki
I can't see any email either, but phone is 076 381300. A quick Google search for "Porn Mae Bungalows Rawai" gives that information...
hi Jamie, i will be going to Phuket in July. Can i ask if its safe for snorkelling as some of my family memebers arent great swimmers. We will be staying along Kamala beach and Rawai. thanks in advance for the tips! =D
Well there's not any snorkeling off Rawai or Kamala at the best of times, not right off the beach - Rawai is very shallow and rocky and its not a swimming beach. Kamala is shallow and sandy. July likely to have some waves on the west coast beaches. But snorkel trips to Koh Khai or Racha Yai, or to Phi Phi will be running. Weather is variable.
Stumbled onto your blog when I googled Rawai beach - glad I did! Love reading all the non-touristy bits. We are staying at the Serenity Resort @ Rawai next week, and looking for some nice places to eat nearby. Nikita's sound like just the ticket - is it still there? Any other recommendations?
Hi Molly,
Serenity is a nice place to stay - do note that it's not quite at Rawai beach, just in the Rawai area.. it faces onto Chalong Bay. Rawai beach about 3km away. Lots of places to eat around Rawai.. we don't head that way too often really as we live near Phuket Town. Nikitas is certainly still there, yes. Enjoy your stay!
Hi Jamie, I am lookin to stay at PARADISE BAY , is that safe and reputable? Is it advisable for a 1 year old eg access to clean water ..? And how far is Rawai from the Phuket airport pls? Thanks alot.
Hi Anne, do you mean Coconut Paradise Villas? I have not been, looks nice, I am sure water is fine. Rawai from airport about 1 hour / 50km - airport in the north of Phuket, Rawai is right in the south.
Update October 2011 - I have a lot of new Rawai photos especially the fishing village and will post sometime in the next few weeks.
Hi Jamie, how to get to rawai beach from karon beach? Is it very far and how much will tuk tuk or taxi fare cost?
As i would like to plan a meal there, as sitting on the mat and tasting their fresh seafood sounds cool..just wonder is it worth going there?
Please advise. Thanks.
Karon to Rawai, about 20 minute drive via Chalong, taxi probably 400 Baht. Yes, worth going - check also this more recent blog post about Rawai Beach.
