Phuket Hotels - Jamie's Recommendations

On Jamie's Phuket Blog, I've made some reviews over the years of recommended hotels on the 3 main beaches (Patong, Karon and Kata) and also hotels which are away from the crowds in quieter areas of Phuket. Yes, there are lots of quiet areas .. it's kind of the main point of this blog to show that there's more to Phuket than just a few busy beaches! Phuket is a big island, it's worth spending some time to research the best hotels and the right location for you. I've been living in Phuket since 1999, so with all that "local knowledge" the Phuket hotel information on this blog should be useful :) Feel free to leave comments or ask questions about hotels on this page.

Phuket Hotels - Where to Book Online?

There are so many hotels to choose from in Phuket... and many online booking sites. Where do you start looking? I recommend to check for available Phuket hotels at Agoda.com. The rates are the best (they say), the choice is wide, there are shed loads of hotel reviews and the website is very easy to use. I use it myself for our holiday hotel bookings. Agoda also has a rewards program - bookings and reviews earn you points which add up to discounts on future bookings. Agoda also has daily special offers.

Khao Lak Hotels

While Khao Lak is not part of Phuket (it's in Phang Nga province), it's not far away, about 70km north of Phuket airport, which is the nearest airport to Khao Lak, so basically we can consider Khao Lak hotels as being part of "greater" Phuket, since the whole region is serviced by Phuket Airport. Khao Lak is very quiet, there are a lot of very nice hotels on the beach, there is very little in the way of nightlife, a good place to just relax. It's also within easy reach of Khao Sok national park and Phang Nga Bay.

Hi Jamie,
first of all, this is a great blog and a lot of help.
A friend and I are planning on visiting Phuket on rather short notice in early December. We're travelling on a smaller budget and would very much like to get a place as near to the beach as possible, maybe on Kata or Karon Beach. Would you have something in mind? Also, would you recommend to make reservations? I was told that it wouldn't be necessary.
Lots of thanks already!

Hi Niels,

When you say "smaller budget" are you looking for a guesthouse or something like that? Plenty of choice in the Karon / Kata beach area:

Low Budget Accommodation in Phuket

Puhket for Backpackers

These kind of places normally don't need advance booking.

Have a great trip!

If you mean Royal Palm Beach Front - great if you want to be right in the middle of Patong Beach. Not my cup of tea, but if you want to be close to the action, go for it!

Hi Jamie,

First of all- I stumble across your blog while doing a google search on Phuket and I'm glad I did. There is so much useful information on here. LOVE it!

I'm going to Phuket next Late Nov/Dec and was wondering would we get a bigger hotel rate if we book our hotel online or upon arrival?

Thanks,

If you want a nice hotel, book online for sure. If you just want a guesthouse or lower budget place, no need to book ahead. You can find plenty of Phuket hotel booking links on this page.

Hi Jamie

My husband and I are looking to book a 2 week holiday in Phuket mid to end January 2009. We will have an 18 month old child with us and we are looking for a hotel that is close to the beach, but walking distance to other hotels, restaurants, shops etc.

Our travel agent can get us a great deal at Evason, but we aren't sure about it as we think it is far away from everything and will be expensive to eat at once there.

Can you recommend anywhere - hotel or location?

Thanks
Felecia

Anonymous Jamie's Phuket said...

Actually if you like peace and quiet Evason is a good bet - and it's not that isolated - Rawai beach is only a couple of minutes away (I guess the resort has a shuttle?) and there are lots of eating options there from simple "sit on the floor" places up to more expensive restaurants like Norbus or Mando Steakhouse. Rawai area has got a lot more developed in recent years.

Fantastic blog site! I will be staying at the Andaman White Beach resort on Nai Thon beach.

Just wondering if you have any advise on getting out and about from there as it is quite isolated? Do the Songthaews go there?

Thanks

Hi Jamie,

This is my first time to your blog, i haven't have the time to go through it yet but i hear many good review bout this blog...really can't wait.

I will be going to Phuket from 11 till 15 July'09 and thought of staying at The Tiger Inn hotel (maybe i got the name wrong but there's a tiger in between those lines!!!)

Any comments? The price is reasonable bout usd30/day and there's 2 of us.Its at patong.
Please advice!!

January 06, 2009
Anonymous Jamie's Phuket said...

Hi Adelyn,

Tiger is on the main road in the middle of Patong, not my first choice of location. Cheap, yes, but not a quiet place. I looked at their website and first thing I saw was a photo of their sign, and just above it another sign saying Karaoke. In any case, I am not a big fan of Patong and personally would not choose to stay on the main road.

If you are coming in July you can get some very good low season bargains at much nicer places. Try Kata or Karon Beaches and check the rates on Agoda.com for places like Thavorn Palm beach Resort or Karon Princess or others near the beach.

Dear Jamie,
I hope it is ok to ask another question. My husband and I are planning to rent a little villa on Karon beach. It is very close to the water, but it feels awkward after what happened 4 years ago. Did they improve safety regulations after tsunami accident? Do you think that we should be worriless sleeping so close to the water?
Thank you.

Hi Jamie,

I'm planning to arrive in Phuket for 10 nights in late March '09. I noticed the prices go down on 1st April with season change. Can you give me any advice on whether to book when there in Phuket, or online in advance, as not sure which would give the best deals? Are the website rates as competitive as, or even better than booking at hotel reception? The plan is to book first few nights then in advance as arriving late in evening, and then book rest of time once there to better aid decision, what do you recon, am I wasting good time there when I can book online in advance for the same, or even cheaper rates?

Many thanks,

Alex

Hi Jamie

Chanced upon your blog, its very informative about phuket.

anyway after some research, ive decided to stay at kata beach for 5nights and have shortlisted 2 hotels for the great panoramic views.

1) Boomerang Village Cottage
2) Sugar Palm Grand Hillside

I am perhaps thinking of staying 3 nights and 2 nights in each hotel. however, i read several reviews that boomerang have very uncomfortable bed. and sugar palm grand is almost half price cheaper than boomerang.. but i still would like to try boomerang.

if u know much abt these hotels, pls share your views with me. thanks in advance !!

Hi Jamie

sorry to ask the same question again but I did not seem to receive an a response

We, my 12 year old daughter and myself are arriving in Phuket on Thursday 9th of April, staying for 12 nights. We have tentatively booked the Woraburi Resort, but after reading all the reviews, I am not sure anymore if this would be the right choice. How does the Woraburi compares to the Baan Karonburi Resort. Or could you recommend something suitable for us. I really want to get this right for my daughter, she has been very sick and this hilday should cheer her up a bit.I would like to have a nice room to go back to in the evenings, food at the hotel is not that important as we prefer to have our meals in the little thai restaurants outside the hotels anyway. What would be your thoughts on that one. Really hoping I will hear from you this time

Thanks in advance

I answered your other comment on the Karon Beach section of this blog already and told you that Woraburi was a nice hotel. Hi Jamie - I was just wondering if you could suggest a nice place for a friend and I stay stay that is right on the beach, that's not too expensive. We would prefer to be away from the tourists. (and in a hut would be nice, but not necessary.)

Inexpensive, right on the beach, hut, away from other tourists... if anyone knows such a place in Phuket, do let me know!

Away from the crowds and right on the beach - easy, BUT such hotels in Phuket are not the cheap ones.

Well, dennis - first of all... why oh why do you want to spend half your stay in Patong? Hold off on your booking for a while and get the best rates at LateStays:

There are so many hotels I cannot recommend ONE, so that's why there is a big list here! Anyway, try Karon or Kata, so much nicer than Patong unless you are addicted to McDonalds. :)

Well, Deevana is in the middle of Patong, not on the beach, I would suggest staying at Karon beach, far more relaxed, many resorts along the beach road. Patong is crowded and I don't really recommend staying there except a few hotels like Graceland or Amari Coral Beach.

Hi there, Fiona here. Coming to Phuket in August. I've heard it's low season. Can we book last minute accommodation from the airport? Also please recommend a nice area for snorkeling, not interested in Patong. Would you recommend a guest house or a resort? Can afford mid range accommodation.

Hi Fiona,

Yes August is low season - for more about what kind of weather to expect see the Phuket Weather Blog. No you cannot book accommodation at the airport, but you can book last minute at LateStays.

Snorkeling not the best in low season, try going to Phi Phi, Khai island, Racha Yai... will be decent if the weather is good, will be less good if the weather is wet.

In low season you can book good resorts for under 1000 Baht/night, so unless you are a backpacker on a tight budget, no need to look at cheaper guesthouses.

1) Amari Coral Beach Resort (Recommened by you) Is it beach facing /on the beach hotel as well how far is it from nightlife of Patong Beach.
2)Blue Marine Resort & Spa
SLightly on the Hill Top but got Sea view Rooms.

Hi Karan,

Well, the Amari Coral Beach resort is very nice indeed, it's quiet but you can walk down to the main beach in about 10 minutes. About 15 minutes walk to the central nightlife area of Patong. Blue Marine is a smaller resort at completely the other end of Patong, further from the center in a quiet area called Kalim.

My husband, sister & I will be visiting Phuket the week before Thanksgiving in November. Having never traveled to Thailand, we are overwhelmed with the choices of where to stay. While we like the resort feel, our budget limits us from spending $500 a night for a room. In addition, we prefer to be in a quiet, relaxing place on the beach, but want the benefit of being close enough to shopping and restaurants in order to get the feel for the local flair. I'm pretty sure Patong would not be our first choice. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance for any help!

August 24, 2009

Phi Phi day trips can be booked at any travel agent, around 2500 Baht for a day.

All the beaches of Phuket in 1 day? Good luck! Sure you can hire a car and dash around, but I would not try to see the whole island in a day! Bikes for rent everywhere.

For questions about tours, best hotels etc.... It is sometimes better to ask other tourists rather than someone who lives here. I don't really do tours..

Try this information:

Phuket Tourist Information by Tourists

Hotels - yes, Patong is not my top choice. You probably want to look at Kata or Karon beaches - see the suggested hotels in those areas above...

Also, we want to stay at beach huts or bungalows instead of high rise hotels. Which site do you recommend me to use?

September 22, 2009
Blogger Jamie Monk in Phuket said...

Hi Cindy,

Kata and Karon are not so quiet, but better than Patong. if you want quieter, try Kamala or Bang Tao - the quieter beaches are also more isolated, less restaurants etc... No chance to get a beach hut here, the real estate is too expensive to allow things like that!

Please let me know if you have been to the Baan Panwa garden Spa resort at the top North Western end of Cape Panwa, www.panwagarden-spa.com refers.
I am taking My Son and his wife on an 8 night holiday to Phuket in December and of course budget esp. for the high season is a big issue. This place has special offers on agoda for early bookings which I would like to take advantage of, but I cannot find reviews anywhere.Any advice will be greatly appreciated

Hi Jamie,
I believe I have found a hotel in Kata that hasn't yet opened called Avista Resort & Spa in Kata. They are offer a special discount for people who book early.
I am considering booking it but nervous because I can't find any reviews on it (normal if it hasn't opened yet). Have you heard of this hotel or seen it?
Thanks

Baan Panwa must be new. Looks great if you like some nature, but do note that there is no beach - it's a mangrove coast.

Avista - yes, not open yet so there cannot be any reviews. I suppose it looks decent enough, will have views over Kata Bay, situated on the hillside.

Hi Jamie,

I am plannig a visit up to Phuket sometime in Feb.

I wil be there with the misses and my 6 year old daughter...I have been doing a lot of research and found that the Sugar Palm Grand Hillside Hotel seems to be a place where I can safely take a child to (close to the beach and shops???). Any comments on the Hotel..

Thanks...Chandru

Sugar Palm Grand Hillside is pretty new, I've been there to pick up guests, lots of open spaces, quite a stark design, close (ish) to the beach and lots of shops and restaurants... but don't be limited by what's close to the hotel... get out and explore Phuket!

Hi Jamie

I stayed at the Chedi hotel on Surin beach and loved the "private" public beach, individual rooms and feel of the place. The massages on the beach were not from the hotel so inexpensive but still felt like I was on a private beach. There were amazing restaurants in the area and very relaxing. Can you recommend somewhere similar for me to return in Jan.

Thanks

Blogger Jamie Monk in Phuket said...

Hi there - well, comparing hotels is quite tricky. The Chedi is indeed very nice, with a little private beach and it's away from the main crowded beaches. To be honest, my view is that if you liked it a lot, book it again!

You might like Sala Phuket or the The Evason.

Happy Travels!

Hello,
Im goin to phuket on April 2010. I thinking to choose which hotel? How your comment about Peach hill hotel, kata beach?
I would like to ask about the transport fee from kata to patong and to phuket town? I planning to stay around kata or karon and hang out to patong. I am worrying about the transportation fee.
Thank for your information. Lookng forward from your reply.

Right next door to Peach Hill is the brand new Avista Resort, so if you wanted to be near Kata Beach, I'd maybe go for that one. From Kata to town, taxi normally 400 Baht, or you can take the local bus for 30 Baht. Have a look at my Phuket Town info on this blog...

Go to Patong for what? Kata is much nicer! Taxi normally 300 Baht to Patong if you must go.

Happy Holidays!

Hi Mel,

Yes, October is still low season and indeed October is statistically the wettest month of the year. See:

Phuket Rainfall Averages

Having said that you can get some lovely days in October. My Weather Blog has archives back to 2006 so you can get an idea how the weather is really like in October.

If it can be changed to November, less chance of rain, but still can't guarantee 24 hour sun :)

Hi Jamie,

Happy New Year! We are heading over on the 20th Jan and would like to know if you are familiar with the Grand Orchid Inn?

Also if you can suggest any activities for a young couple that want to see Thailand? I have already noted your trip to the brewery and the floating restaurant.

Thanks :)

Hi Jamie,
Any tips on places to stay with small kids? Mine are two and four, and I'll be with my husband and mother so we need two rooms. We're going in late March. I would love to be on the beach but not sure we can afford it.
Thanks heaps!

Hello! Well, I guess with small kids you don't want to be too isolated - I mean, it's up to you - you want a quiet beach, busy beach? Try Kata Beach, something like the Ibis Kata Beach or the Peach Hill Resort maybe.

Hi Jamie,

First, this is an incredible blog full of great info on Phuket! Thanks so much! Second, I am planning to stay there for a week during July with my family. Since it is low season (with high tides), I was wondering if there are any parts of Phuket (with a resort) where my kids can swim in the ocean and play safely? Basically, how bad is it? I was so looking forward to going there and playing in the ocean with my kids until I read that swimming is very dangerous. Is that true? I am considering four possible places: Katathani, Naithonburi, Cape Panwa, and Andaman White Beach. Which one has the safest beach in high tide season? From reading your blog, I have the same taste - prefer a quiet beach, but easy access to local restaurants and merchants (avoiding the tourist traps). Thx in advance for any advice.

Hi Ben,

I can't guarantee any calm seas in low season - yes, sometimes the beaches are calm.. probably Cape Panwa is best for less waves, all the others you mention are on the west coast. You can get a good idea about the weather in low season from my weather blog - Phuket Weather.

Hi Jamie,

Thanks for the excellent blog. It is really helpful for first time visitors to phuket such as myself.

I will be visiting phuket at the end of March for 3 nights with my wife. We are planning to stay @ Hilton Phuket Arcadia Resort & Spa in Karon Beach. How is this hotel and beach? Is it far from the main town and are there restaurants/shops close by? We would like not to be in a secluded part of the island, hence thought this would be a good hotel choice.

Also, where is the nearest port from the hotel, where one can catch a ferry to the phi phi islands?

I know these are quite a few questions. Would really appreciate any help/advice you can give.

Thanks!

February 28, 2010
Blogger Jamie Monk in Phuket said...

Hi there! Well, the Hilton is certainly very good, a spacious resort with gardens, several pools, a stones throw from the beach, 10 - 15 minute walk to busier areas in Karon or Kata.

If you've not booked yet, have a look at LateStays for booking ess than 28 days in advance:

Hilton Booking on LateStays
Phuket Hotels on LateStays

To get to Patong, if you must, is about 8km by tuk tuk (300 Baht), to Phuket Town around 20km (500 Baht) or there is a local bus that runs along the back road behind the Hilton, 30 Baht to Phuket Town. To Phi Phi, ferry terminal is east side of Phuket Town, you can but tickets at any travel agent, should be about 500 Baht including a hotel pick up from the Hilton.

Cheers!

I've heard that its really far away from everything! :( Any advise would be greatly appreaciated. Many thanks!

Blogger Jamie Monk in Phuket said...

The Merlin Beach Resort is several km out of Patong, has it's own beach, personally I like the location, but you do need transport to get anywhere and I am sure the taxis at the hotel will rip people off to get to Patong - it's too far to walk really. I suggest renting a scooter, you can get one for 200 Baht per day, which is cheaper than a single taxi ride.

The beach is not the best but if you head out of the hotel and turn left, a couple of km over to Paradise Beach - very nice!

The Reviews on Agoda look decent, a few unhappy people.

Well, that's what this page is about - I have recommended a whole bunch of hotels - just have a look through and find one that matches your budget! The hotel pages all have links to a couple of different booking sites.

When are you coming? Now? Soon? Low season prices are very low. If you are coming in high season you'll need to be a bit more careful with the budget!

i'm so glad to have found your blog because i was just feeling all stressed up a while ago regarding my phuket trip next month.

we're be there from 18th to 21st aug, bascially celebrating my bday there with my bf.

wanted to get a room with private outdoor jacuzzi and i saw your recommendation on the first thread.thanks! will look into it!

but i'm pretty much worried about the taxi trip from airport to hotel after reading discussions about how nasty things can get. any recommendation on the taxi trip? or should i just get airport transfer from the hotel itself?

and yes, i agree that we should avoid Patong because things will probably be very touristy-priced. however, we're thinking of doing at least one water sports for at least a day. preferably snorkeling. where should i go to get these trips and how much will they usually cost?

thanks!

Blogger Jamie Monk in Phuket said...

Hello! Yes, I agree, skip Patong, it's too crowded.

Taxi from airport is very easy. There are limos, you book at a desk, or you can go outside and turn right walk 100m and get a meter tai (cheaper) OR yuo can get a shared minibus, cheaper but takes a lot longer.

Tours/snorkeling and even airport pick up - you can contact some friends of mine who run a travel agent - Easy Day Thailand - ask for Ingo and Diego, they can look after you.

Cheers!

Well.. in terms of safety, I do not think you need to worry if you take a limo or a meter taxi. Nothing is going to happen to you! I'd personally take the meter taxi coz it's cheaper. And if any taxi stops on the way at a travel agents, just say "no thank you, we have booked everything already".

Hi Jamie,

I'm glad I came across your blog. My friends and I intend to go Phuket next month and we are contemplating between Patong and Kata because the flight + package for a 4D3N stay only includes these 2 beaches.

We are looking for water sports in the day and getting drunk at night. Which of the beaches do you recommend? From what I see, you don't seem to like Patong because of the crowd. Any other recommendations you can give me? With regards to water sports and some booze at night? :D

Hello James,

We are planning on going to Phuket from Phi Phi Island for two nights, we are able to get good rates for new hotels in Phuket; The Westin Siray Bay, The Radisson Panwa Beach and the Renaissance. Are you able to provide me with additional information on their location, beach and nearby amenities such as local restaurants bars etc. or can you advise me on which of these choices has the best location and beach? Any information will help.

August 05, 2010
Blogger Jamie Monk in Phuket said...

Yes, they are all very new hotels... West Siray Bay is very out of the way on the far east side of Phuket town in the Sirey Isand area. Sure will be a nice hotel but zero local bars or restaurants apart from the hotel, or a 20-25 minute ride into Phuket Town.

The Radisson Panwa similar - top quality but it's at Cape Panwa, nice area, but a long way from other things.

And the Renaissance is on Mai Khao beach, not far from the airport but 40km from the main beach areas

3 great new hotels made for people who LIKE to be far from the crowds. If you want a big choice of bars, restaurants and shops, stick to the main beaches (Kata, Karon, Patong). If you want peace and quiet and won't complain that the hotel restaurant is expensive, these kind of isolated resorts are perfect getaways.

Hi there...

Well, avoid crowds.. depends when you are coming. if coming in September, not many crowds anywhere. If December, need to be a quieter beach like Kamala. Hi Ernest,

Yes, lots of beaches in Phuket, some are very quiet, and if you want jet skis, you need to look at Patong, Kata or Karon - see recommended hotels on this page. Kata is the quietest of those. For kayaking, not off the beach, but can do kayak trips in Phang Nga Bay around the limestone islands and caves. Ask Easy Day Thailand about tours and trips.

Do you have recommendations on the area to stay that would provide students with enough nightlife without the seedier side of Patong?

Also, we are studying disaster relief as part of the course -- do you have any recommended sites to visit that might help us learn about the aftermath of the tsunami?

Thanks so much!

Hi Patrick,

Yeh, Patong is best avoided. Kata hs bars and beachside places which are non girly, look at hotels at the south end like Kata Palm Resort.

Tsunami was 6 years ago, you will not see anything in Phuket in the way of disaster tourism, though it gets a mention at the Thalang National Museum and the Aquarium. Better go to Khao Lak area where the famous police boat is still there half a km inland, and there is a tsunami museum in Khao Lak also, not been there myself. Last words I wrote on the tsunami on this blog in 2008 - here.

Hi Jamie

I am travelling to Phuket for 10 days - arriving at Phuket's international airport - for my friend's wedding which takes place at Andara Phuket Resort, Kamala Beach. We are travelling before the wedding to travel around Phuket so are looking for accommodation that will be relativel close to the report and at the same time a good point for visiting other areas near by (for example we definitely want to make the day Phi Phi islands trip). What would be a good area to stay? Many many thanks in advance! Agatha

Hi Agatha,

Although Phuket is quite big, nothing is TOO far away. Wherever you stay, you can take a day trip to Phi Phi Island, and from the airport to Kata and Karon beaches is about 45km, normally takes around 1 hour by taxi. If the wedding is at Andara... can I assume Andara is not in your budget? There are other Hotels around Kamala Beach - the beach is nice, pretty quiet, no problem to get from there on any tours you want - maybe you can ask my friends at Easy Day Thailand about tours and things to do.

Have a great trip!

Thanks for that, yes as you guessed Andara is out of the question but also questioning how attractive Kamala would be as a base. I dont want to waste time changing hotels and quite keen as per your recommendations to be based at Kata beach for most of the trip. Is it too unrealistic to get a taxi to the Kamala resort and back? I cannot find anywhere an estimate on distances between beaches. Do you know how much it would roughly cost and most importantly would be safe?

Hi Jamie

Brilliant blog, by the way, and loads of really helpful information!

I wondered if you could help or point me in the right direction, as I am on information overload?

I live in the UK and my sister lives in NZ. I hate the British winter and want to get some sunshine and daylight for a few weeks. I was thinking of flying out to Thailand (it's been 10 years since I last wandered around there, so I am a bit out of date) for about 3 weeks. Then my sister wants to fly in from NZ for about 8-10 days and then I'll fly back with her to NZ before returning to the UK.
Phuket seems to be good as a destination (my sister is not that well travelled) and as I am meeting up with her for only 8-10 days, thought Phuket would be a good base for us both, rather than island hopping too much. Maybe I am getting old, but seems stressful to me.....!

It seems that renting a villa or condo for a month or so works out cheaper than an hotel, especially as it is peak season then.
Other than Siam Real Estate (whom I have emailed sand waiting to hear from)are there any other reliable rental agencies you could point me to?
We are both in our late 40s, so don't want the likes of Pattong- just near or on a decent beach, some places to eat/drink nearby and to relax a bit. And do some day trips with the Easy Days company you recommended.
My sis was very ill recently, and I am paying for the flights and accomodation, all to hopefully help her feel a bit better. Also I'm the sole organiser, so no pressure for me!

Or should we consider going off to one of the other islands for a few days if it is fairly hassle free??

Any suggestions would be really appreciated

Thanks so much for your time

Jenni

Hi Tasha,

Yes, Phuket is great! I hardly ever go to Patong although it has some great hotels and many people like to stay somewhere busy.

What Puhket lacks these days is just what you are looking for - lower/mid price bungalows on a nice beach which is quiet but not too quiet. I think Kamala Beach might be your best bet, although you may need to change your idea... bungalows on the beach really don't exist here except a place like The Chedi (expensive, more like 4 - 5000 Baht minimum) or Seaside Cottages - more backpacker although they do have a couple of nicer bungalows - but is very isolated, no choice for food except to eat there or take a long walk! Hmm, if you don't mind NOT being on the beach, maybe Boomerang Village might suit?

Hi Jenni,

Yes, there are lots of islands, but unless you are doing by private transfer (expensive but hassle free) it can involve a fair amount of travel on minibuses, ferries, taxis etc... Phuket is a good place to stay as a base for day trips, I am sure the guys at Easy Day Thailand can help with anything you need.. come to think of it I am sure they can recommend some house or villa for rent also - you can ask them about it, Ingo and Diego are the ones to ask for and let them know Jamie recommended their service. I have known them for years, we all used to work together in the same scuba shop.

Have a good trip, hope the Phuket weather makes your sister feel better :)

Hi Jamie,
Me and my partner are coming to Phuket for one of our stops in Thailand, and after reading your blog I have decided Patong is a definite no no! We are looking for something a little more Thai with plenty of greenery and a pool. Preferably a short taxi ride away from some of the hustle and bustle should we choose to venture out for a night out or just to try out some local resturants. Our budget is around £30.00-£40.00 a night.

I know you generally deal with Phuket but was wondering if you could offer any advice on traveling from Krabi to Koh Samui as rail doesn't seem to be option? If you can't help with this part I understand but just thought I'd ask anyway?

Grateful for any help and guidance as this is our first trip...

Hi Fay - your budget is good for this time of year (low season) - for 30 - 40 pounds you can get nice hotels.. but if you are coming in high season November - April, more limited.

Agree, I am not a Patong fan.. Try Kata.. maybe the Sawasdee Village - maybe a tad over budget but good deal in low season.

Hi Jamie!

Thanks for a great blog! Do you know anything about a new hotel called The Nap Patong at 5/55 Hadd Patong Road., Patong Beach.

The photos on the hotel's website look amazing, but of course, those are professional photos.

I've only found two reviews because the hotel is so new. Any information you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

I really don't know... there are cheap places to stay all over and a link on this very page which I will repeat here : Cheap places to stay in Phuket. Rentals - if you want a cheap place it will be away from the beach, you can rent a house for as little at 7000 Baht per month, but such cheap places are not online, as nobody makes any money from it! For better places to rent try Siam Real Estate.

Certainly better in Phuket than Samui right now, yeh some rain, but yesterday afternoon was sunny in patches. This morning started wet but won't last long. No wind. Check the Webcam at Karon Beach for live weather! See you in Phuket!

Hi Jamie, we are a couple planning to visit Phuket for the first time in February. We are looking for a 5 Star Hotel, NOT in Patong, but on a nice direct access to a beautiful beach. Also, somewhere close or within a hotel where we can book activities to visit beautiful sites like phi phi island or also do some snorkeling etc... There are so many areas and beaches, we just dont know where to book. We're looking for somewhere luxurious, best beach and access to activities, has some nice pubs and restaurants, and close to other hotels or vicinities if we plan to explore. ... where do you recommend?

December 12, 2010
Blogger Jamie Monk in Phuket said...

Tricky one! 5 star resorts in Phuket do tend to be on the beach but also tend to be in more remote areas with less access to other hotels and restaurants. A few that you might like which I have reviewed on this blog ...

Indigo Pearl
Sala Phuket
Cape Panwa Hotel

Thats for starters!

Hello - well, the Adamas Resort is a luxury resort, at the south end of Nai Yang Beach in the north of Phuket near the airport - quite isolated, good if you want to really relax with no crowds, not good if you want shopping, nightlife and masses of restaurants to choose from. You can check the reviews, mostly very good.

Happy Travels!

Hi Jamie, just stumbled across your blog, brilliant info, thanks. Wanted to get your advice on where to stay. We are heading to Phuket at the end of the month with our two toddlers. One week booked at Marriott Beach club in Mai Khao. The other week I am looking for a different experience: not quite so remote, a bit busier, on a nice beach that is safe to swim from at this time of year, still a family friendly hotel (apartments or interlinked rooms) but not necessarily a massive marriott type of hotel. I've looked at lots of tripadvisor reviews, but that's left me more confused, need your macro view! Any ideas? Thanks, Noemi

Blogger Jamie Monk in Phuket said...

If you have some deal with Marriott, they also have the Marriott Courtyard at Kamala Beach.. also one in Patong, though you may find Patong too busy!

Most of the hotels that are "family" resorts do tend to be the big ones, like Movenpick on Karon Beach or Le Meridien or any of the Laguna Resorts

Jamie,
Thank you for such an insightful and informative blog. Last year I followed your advice and checked Agoda, where I got a great deal on the Horizon Karon Beach hotel for a 3-week stay (£19 a night [inc breakfast] for sea views May/June!).

Brief review:
Spotless and well-appointed room, excellent buffet breakfasts and the staff are superb. The facilities are very good - two large pools, toddler and play areas, pool bar, multiple restaurants. The gym is simple but cool, clean and tidy and the spa is absolutely first rate. Though not right on the beach it has a good location being near to Kata Centre and the shops and restaurants. The nearest section of the beach is very good, with great snorkeling along the southern breakwater.

Some prices are a little 'silly' - such as laundry - but plenty of local alternatives at very reasonable rates. Not much space for cars if you hire one.

Worth a recommend if you can get a room at the right price...

Best Wishes

Clive

Hi Jamie
I am coming to Phuket for 14 days in June with my 20 yr old son. I want to stay on Phi Phi Island for a few days most likely at end of trip and the rest of the time on Phuket. I would like to stay somewhere nice preferably with a seaview, doesn't have to be on the beach but would like a nice view. The other thing is while I like the excitement that Patong will offer I am very consious of being with my 20 yr old son, so don't want to have the bar girls in my face, not that we wont go there, just don't want to have to deal with it. So open to going to another beach that also has its own restaurants/nightlife.

Yep, Thavorn Beach Village is on its own bit of seafront outside Patong, very quiet area. The reviews seem to indicate maybe the hotel is a bit old but great location! In June (low season) - rates are very very low, so a slightly tired looking hotel might be excused! One other thing is you are not within walking distance of anything - will need to use taxis or hotel shuttles.

hi jamie,
after reading your blog, i realise there's so much to do in phuket yet we have so little time. my friend and i are heading there on 13 jun early morning around 8am and departing 15jun early morning, 8am. while i do not wanna stay too far from the airport, it seems the things we wanna attempt doing while we are there are far away. for eg. going to the waterfall, the big buddha, phuket town, visit the temple and see the elephants (not top priority tho') apart from going to the beach of course.

i dunno where to stay!! help!!!

Hi Jasmine,

With so little time, best to stay central and not out on the beach - I'd suggest a night in Phuket Town where you can easily get to temples, waterfalls and elephants and the Big Buddha - ask the guy at Easy Day Thailand to figure out a tour for you including all of that, and you might still have time to get to a beach :)

Hi Jamie,

Great blog .. just wanted to ask a few questions .

I am planning to go to phuket for about 8-9 days around 25th Nov this year .. is it good time to go to Phuket ? or should i wait a few more days .. rain is the only concern ..

I have a budget of about 8000 Baht a night. I am considering these hotels ..
1. JW marriott khao lok
2. Amari coral beach
3. Indigo pearl

I am thinking of choosing two of these, are they good ? Which two will you suggest.
Are there any other great hotels in this range that I should consider ? Please let me know.

Hello :)

All great hotels, but what do you want around your hotel?

JW Marriott Khao Lak - so this is at Khao Lak, not Phuket... Khao Lak is around 60km north of Phuket airport, in Phang Nga province. It's beach, beach and more beach. Want to relax with no crowds, good place.

Indigo Pearl - at Nai Yang Beach, near the airport (no noise), good for local life and nature, great resort, Nai Yang is quiet but has lots of beach restaurants.

Amari Coral Beach Resort - resort is right at the south end of Patong Beach, the most developed stretch of tourism in Thailand maybe. Nice resort, but only stay there if you do want to take a walk in Patong with the crowds.

More hotels - try The Best Hotels in Phuket - top 10 list.

Enjoy!

a good beach - so I chose khao lok,

and a little bit of water sports and shopping - so amari

wil consider choosing some of these, thanks a lot !

Hi Linda,

Thanks for the luv.

Patong is not my first choice of places to stay but yes I know there are quite a few Halal restaurants in Patong and there is also a mosque on the north side of town. If you come into Patong from the airport you will almost certainly drive past the mosque unless the driver takes a back road.

November - yes, its high season and not as hot as later in the season, but you certainly will get some rain here and there. We don't get 24 hour sun in Phuket :)

Plenty of hotels to choose from - some recommendations at Patong Beach Hotels

Enjoy your stay!

Kata to Patong is about 10km... varying by a few km depending where in Kata and Patong you are coming from and going too... A tuk tuk can take 2 adults and 3 kids. They will charge about 400 Baht each way Kata - Patong.

Hi there Jamie!!

I badly really need your advise please. Both me and my gf would be spending a holiday on middle of next month over the weekend. here are the suggestion i would need from you Jamie.

1. Both me and my gf are vegetarians, where can we find vegetarian food? (no egg)
2. we need a hotel some where quiet, yet near to the beach and city (bazaars and shopping)
3. im looking at about 1000bhat per day.

Enlighten me please Jamie : )

Thanks in advance!

June 26, 2011
Blogger Jamie Monk in Phuket said...

OK.. vegetarian food - you ask in any restaurant you can get something without meat. The word for vegetarian in Thai is "Jae".

Ah, the old "quiet but close to the action" dilemna... do you want to be in Patong? (busiest part of Phuket) in which case, start by looking at Hotels at Patong Beach, although please note that Patong is not the same as Phuket City / Phuket Town which is about 15km from Patong, that's the more local place but not by the beach. Karon and Kata beaches are quieter but maybe too quiet if you want a city and lots of shopping.

Hi Jamie! This blog is great!

My partner and I are living in Japan and planning a 10 day trip to Thailand that may include a stay in Vietnam as well.

We'd love to come to Phuket. Our tour guide warned us about rough surf during the low season. Is that true? About how rough is rough? Is one side of the island affected more than the other?

Thanks so much!
Julia

June 27, 2011
Blogger Jamie Monk in Phuket said...

Hey Julia,

Low season - the waves can be quite big at the beaches and every year some people drown. Red flags fly for a reason. Better to swim in the hotel pool.

All the main beaches are on the west coast, though (for example) Kata Beach has less waves than Karon Beach. There are no beaches to speak of on the east coast which is a much quieter area in terms of tourism. Almost all hotels are on the west coast. Those on the east side tend to be 5 star properties with an "away from the hordes" theme, though some people stay at such hotels and then complain about being too far from the action... :)

Hi Jamie,

I'm thinking about heading to the Village Coconut Island in mid October. Do you have any thoughts on the resort? I'm looking for somewhere kid friendly but at the same time not overrun with kids (the villas with private pools are appealing as is the kids club for my son when he wants to get away from mum and dad!!) I know I'm going at the end of monsoon season but it's the only time I have off, so I'm hoping is not going to be too bad.
Thanks :)

Blogger Jamie Monk in Phuket said...

Ah, The Village on Coconut Island - great getaway, do be aware that you are actually on an island, and you are a long way from the main beaches. There are somegood restaurants nearby at Laem Hin and floating just off Coconut island, but its the kind of place you stay to avoid the crowds.

Check the rates for The Village at Agoda.com.

Enjoy your stay! Hope the weather is OK :)

Thanks Jamie, yep I'm aware that it's about 1/2 water taxi to Laem Hin, but I reckon we'll probably hire a car from Laem Hin and go for a drive on a couple of the days we are there (we've only got 5 days), the rest of the time will be chilling out, which is much needed! We stayed years ago on a resort in a bay north of Patong, only visited Patong once for dinner and another day for a wander around so I don't have any need to go there again. Happier to take the car and explore other places.
I actually would love to hire a couple of bikes (my husband and I both have licenses) but I've heard a few horror stories about riding over there... Is it really unsafe?

August 14, 2011
Blogger Jamie Monk in Phuket said...

A car is better for getting around longer distances - especially from Laem Hin, since you will need to drive on some busy roads. The little road down to Laem Hin is off the main airport road - fast and busy and you may need to do u-turns depending where you are heading.

Hi,

My wife and I are traveling to Southeast Asia in just about 2 weeks and (as of tomorrow) I need to finalize our Phuket area reservations. We'll be in the Phuket / Krabi area from 17 Dec. until 22 Dec. I am seriously struggling with where to stay. We want to begin somewhere quiet, lovely, romantic, and relaxing. But then be able to go on tours / trips around the islands and away from the craziness. I don't think we can do 5 nights at the same resort without access to some part of outside civilization. Any advice would be great. I was thinking about staying at Keavola or Holiday Inn on Ko Phi Phi for a couple of nights and then moving to Phuket. As for Phuket, this is where I am really struggling. Which do folks prefer JW Marriott, Renaissance Phuket, Katathani, or somewhere else? As for the Mai Khao places - which is better = JW or Renaissance?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. We need to make a decision asap.

Thank!

Hi Dan,

If it was my choice I'd stay at the Renaissance - it's new, it's on Mai Khao Beach, nice and quiet, but of course you can book tours from wherever you stay. Just note that Mai Khao is quite remote, not at all close to the main tourist beaches - I like that, but if want to be closer to the action....

For tours, just contact my friends at Easy Day Thailand - they can pick you up from Renaissance no worries.

Enjoy your trip!

Hi Guarav,

Phuket Town is (for me) much more interesting than the tourist beaches, just you'll need to take taxis or hire a vehicle if you want a beach. About 15km to Patong or 20km to Kata or Karon. I have had a couple of friends stay at Casa Blanca - very good location in town right by the old town. There is some nightlife in town, like bars and live music, places like Route 68, Rockin' Angels, Timber Hut, The Mine and several more in the same area. The main tourist nightlife is in Patong. I'd not recommend taking a scooter from town and back in the night. But a tuk tuk will charge like 400 Baht each way...

Hi Tammy,

Firstly - hope for good weather, May is the start of low season, weather might not be ideal, but often continues hot and sunny into May which means you get low season deals with high season weather! For snorkeling and diving right on your doorstep, staying at Racha Yai Island would be a good idea, either at the very nice Racha Resort or the cheaper Ban Raya Resort both right on the beach and both have small in house dive centers. Yeh, Racha is a bit isolated, limited dining options, but you are right there next to clear waters!

Hello Jamie,
I have been to thailand and islands before by myself and never booked hotels prior due to never paying more than $70-$100 aus for 4 star.
I m traveling in a few days with a partner and this time I dont want to put her through finding a hotel when we arrive.
I can see you recommend agoda however there are prices for $500-$800 per night for a half decent room.
Can you recommend anyone else to discuss cheaper hotels or are all booking agents making 3 to 10 times the real hotel price.

February 10, 2013
Blogger Jamie Monk in Phuket said...

Agoda sells all kind of hotels. It's high season right now, and this is Chinese New Year week too. Well, I find that hotel walk-in rates are more than online rates, but if you think you can save several hundred dollars per night, you might as well book on arrival (if there's a room available). If your idea of half-decent is 500 - 800 dollars, you must be much richer than me :)

February 10, 2013
Blogger Jamie Monk in Phuket said...

Jenny - even in low season the good hotels are full, and you get very good low season rates whether you book now or last minute - check Agoda for deals - June weather is unpredictable, can be wet, windy, sunny, perfect ... so don't book any tours until you are here .. contact Easy Day Thailand for tours, transfers, days out etc...

Kata Beach is OK for paddling most of the time. The ones that get the waves and undertow are Karon and Naiharn especially. Kata is not too bad, but hey, sometimes in the low season, you are better to be by the pool and not try to swim in the sea.

Do u have any recommendation for a hotel that allows 3 adults to occupy a room, with jacuzzi, in patong, but probably a few minutes walk away from the middle of the beach so at least during night time, surroundings ain't gonna be too noisy. Appreciate much for your advise!

So many hotels in Patong that I agree, very hard to decide .. deluxe rooms at the Deevana Resort have jacuzzis and you can get extra beds .. maybe start by looking there. And here's some More Patong Beach hotels ... enjoy your stay!
