Hills and Views in Phuket
Buddha Mountain (Phuket Big Buddha)

In the Nakkerd Hills overlooking much of southern Phuket, a 45m high Buddha has been under construction for several years. We first went up here before the building started. The main Buddha statue is complete, and the whole area should be complete sometime in 2012 or... This is one of my favourite places in Phuket and I am sure Buddha Mountain will be blogged yet again! You can hike up from Karon Beach (see linke below). It's not just the Buddha, it's the views!

Karon Viewpoint and Phromthep Cape
Probably the two most visited viewpoints in Phuket. Karon viewpoint has a view across Kata Noi, Kata and Karon beaches and the picture is found on just about all Phuket websites, this one included! It's basically "the" Phuket viewpoint. Phromthep cape is the rocky headland in the south west of Phuket, great for views, great for sunsets, and don't miss the lighthouse... and recently I hiked for the first time right to the end of the cape!

Naiharn / Wind Turbine Viewpoint
Just North of Phromthep Cape, in between Yanui and Naiharn beaches is a big white wind turbine, and there's a viewpoint here too where people sometimes go paragliding off the steep cliff.

More Great Phuket Views
Radar Hill (with the round radar dome on top) overlooking Patong Beach has some fantastic views on the way up, and nobody ever seems to come up here. Khao Khad is a viewpoint in Cape Panwa, one of our favourite areas of Phuket - there is a view tower and a superb view across Chalong Bay. Rang Hill and Monkey Hill are both in Phuket Town - good views and monkeys too!

Some back roads in the hills can lead to great views. I have done a (hard!) hike up to the highest point in Phuket which sits between Kathu waterfall and Kamala Beach. Any back road is worth a follow in Phuket to get an unexpected view!
• Hiking to the Roof of Phuket
• Back road over the mountain above Patong
• Meditation Centre near Phromthep
You can also get nice views from some of the temples in Phuket, such as Koh Sirey Temple which is built on a hill, Wat Sapam on the east coast, or from Chalong Temple. And all along the west coast especially between the beaches on the rocky headlands there are great sea views.
And get your camera out when flying in to Phuket, oh and make sure you have a window seat to get views of Phuket, Phi Phi, Phang Nga Bay... See Phuket Views from the Air, and Seaplane Flight to Phi Phi. The seaplane flight was particularly amazing! Check out the view below over Maya Bay!

Get up a hill! It's good to get some fresh air and see Phuket from another angle. In fact.. did you know? Phuket got it's name from the Malay word "Bhukit" which means, yes you guessed it, hill.

I really enjoy your website. Helpful and informative! My question has to do with hikes in Phuket province. Are you aware of any?
-Greg
Hi Greg,
Phuket is certainly not a hikers paradise! You can take a walk around parks and such, but I guess that's not what you are looking for? You can hike up trails to waterfalls at Bang Pae waterfall and Kathu waterfall and indeed it is possible to hike from Bang Pae waterfall over the hill to Ton Sai waterfall - see:
Phuket Gazette Article
I'd like to do it one day, but not sure my little kids would enjoy it!
Another place to look is Fiddlehead in Phuket Blog - this guy has been hiking up hills, machete in hand and does admit that Phuket is not really set up for hiking!
hi there, i'm staying at karon beach area. to be able to reach kata viewpoint and Phromthep Cape, is it possible to go by tuk tuk? any idea how much will it cost? or is it more advisable to rent a bike?
anyway, very informative website on phuket!!
Hi ronnie,
From Karon a tuk tuk will probably charge you around 600 Baht round trip to the Kata viewpoint plus Phromthep. Moped hire around 200 - 250 Baht per day. Guess which I think is better! Moped means you have more freedom, can also stop at Naiharn Beach or Rawai beach, explore the back roads, stop for a drink if you feel like it... Just be sure you wear a helmet, drive safe and get an international driving licence before you come.
Cheers
Jamie
hello jamie,
planning a trip to phuket in the middle of May ,does is rain much during this period , plaaning alot of outdoor activities.
staying around Patong area.
aran
Hi Aran,
May is one of the wettest months on average - see Phuket Rainfall Averages but the weather is rarely too bad to stop you getting out and about. Don't be put off by a few drips!
hi jamie,
thnx for the earlier info,How the weather over there.
just like know is the night life at patong area safe ?
Anything to be careful bout.
does the transport cost much travelling around the island.
Im searching for historical landmarks which u can suggest.
Hi Aran,
Latest Phuket Weather
Nightlife - safe, but look out for drunk idiots at 2am and don't fight lady boys.
Transport. I need to write something on the blog sometime. Tuk Tuks are quite expensive. Buses run only to and from Phuket Town. Best idea if you really want to explore is to rent a car, which can be less than 1000 Baht per day depending what car you want.
History - recommend a tour in Phuket Town with Phuket Heritage Trails, a visit to the Phuket Mining Museum, some older temples such as Wat Phra Nang Sang ....
helo jamie just like an update on the weather over this couple of days...thnks
Phuket Weather blog - on that blog check the webcams, forecasts, satellite pictures, radar.. also I Tweet the weather daily (along with other things). Don't update weather blog every day, not possible.
hi jamie,
the weather looks great , need another info on the food..are they halal or muslim food around patong area.
if there is any ..can you suggest some good spots.
aran
There are some Arab restaurants on the main Ratuthid road around Soi Kebsup area. Also for more local Halal food in Patong, the area right at the north end of Ratuthid road and turn right heading out of Patong is a Muslim area, the new Patong Mosque is there, quite an obvious landmark.
Would you recommend the Swiss Palm Beach Hotel in Phuket? Thanks :)
Hi Carey -
Well, I don't know much about the Swiss Palm Beach Hotel other than it's in Patong and is more like appartments than a hotel - at the quieter end of Patong Beach.
Lots more recommended Phuket Hotels on this blog :)
Daar Jamie,
Great writing and source of info, are u , THx therefore..
Am worried bout THE weather forecast 4 next 14 days ..as well as THE latest tsunami warming...
Can u update On THE?
Arriving prettig Soon
THx so Much

I would not be worried by weather - this time of year (late April) hot with some little thunderstorms. And also don't worry about earthquakes.
