Phuket Restaurant Tips: Laem Hin Seafood
Phuket has many restaurants slightly off the beaten track and more or less unknown to tourists. Laem Hin Seafood is one of these. Popular with locals, it can get busy, especially at weekends. If you see a western face there, you can be pretty sure they live in Phuket.Location: A little North of Phuket Town, at Laem Hin. There is a signposted road off the main airport road. I think the sign is only in Thai. It's not far south of the Boat Lagoon, well worth a visit if you like boats and home to the Boat Lagoon Resort where we go and use the pool sometimes. Laem Hin has a small fishing community, there are old wooden houses on stilts and some newer houses closer to the main road. From Laem Hin jetty you can get boats to Koh Maphrao and Koh Rang. There are always some boats buzzing around. At Koh Maphrao there are some floating restaurants, also popular with locals.
The restaurant at Laem Hin is built over the water with views across the southern end of Phang Nga bay. It's a seafood restaurant, with live fish, prawns, lobster, crabs in tanks ready to cook. When you order anything like this, the price is per 100g, and will often be more expensive than you think, even though this is not a tourist restaurant - more of a middle class Phuket local restaurant, and many Phuket people do have the cash to splash! The food always comes quickly - there is a big kitchen and lots of staff. The waitresses can be a bit grumpy, but that does not detract from the food, the views, the peace.Google Earth (http://earth.google.com/) has a high resolution scan for the east side of Phuket. The picture above shows Laem Hin (on the left) where you find the restaurant and a boat jetty, and the east side of Koh Maphrao, with its beaches and the floating restaurants.

We went a few days ago. I had "yam gung seab" - dried shrimp salad, made with papaya, onions, tomato, chili, lime juice. Wife likes to eat spicy seafood soup. Big dish of rice, a few cokes. Get some fried rice and omelette for the kids. Add a side dish of "hor mok" (curried fish custard cooked in banana leaves). For us, a bit of an expensive meal out - total bill 400 Baht (10 US$).

great site!!!
really enjoy it.
can't wait to get to phuket!
Laem Hin is a fantastic place to visit, the restaurant has its own longtail boat to bring you to the floating deck, the food is fantastic, but the staff as reported can be a little curt. However well worth a visit, great for the kids. Don't be rushed order your food in small orders, share and order again, the food comes so quick it can be like McDonalds, in and out in no time. Eat slow, drink slow and enjoy the place. Great and Memorable.
Hi anonymous...
Yes, Laem Hin Seafood is a good place to eat.. but you must be thinking of a different place, as Laem Hin is on the mainland and has a carpark :) There are floating restaurants nearby at Koh Maphrao... I think you're talking about Kru Suwit... We ate there once and I think you pay for the boat ride and the unique location. Anyways, we now prefer Pak Nam Seafood just north of Phuket Town... man I can taste that Yam Gung Seab now...
I was in Phuket with the family last week. We had lunch & dinner at Laem Hin on the same day! Great ambiance, fresh seafood, very reasonably priced. What else can one ask for :)

We found Laem Hin on our last visit in October 2007 and have been there 5 times on this trip in January 2009. It is our favourite restaurant on the island, staff very friendly, some speak good english, but try to speak some thai, it really helps. I cannot recommend this place highly enough, an absolute must visit!! To add to Jamies directions, head toward Phuket Town from the north, and about 1.5 km after a shell garage, on a bend uphill, you should see a sign for The Village, its a tight turn but turn there and just keep going down that road abt 2km!!

We have visited Laem Him on many visits to Phuket and can testify that it is one of the best places for real thai food on the island.
Just saw the reference to Pak Nam seafood, didn't see that before we went, but will be sure to try it next time.
Hi Jamie,
May I know how should i direct this Laem Hin Seafood to tuk-tuk or taxi driver? We are travelling in a group of 10 staying in Patong beach by the way.
Hi estherlei - I do believe if you ask for Laem Hin Seafood, the driver will know where to go!
Leam Hin and Kru Suwit, which one is better? I can't make up my mind.
Ah.... try both! Have a small meal at Laem Hin and then get the boat to Kru Suwit... I have eaten at Kru Suwit only once, and prefer Laem Hin... actually maybe now I prefer Pak Nam Seafood :)
The seafood at Laem Hin was awesome. Great prices too. Took us awhile to find the place but it was worth it.
I stayed in the Twinpalms on Surin Beach and rented a moped to get to Laem Hin. The drive took about 30mins on the moped. Contact me if you need directions from the Eastern side of the Island.
woops! I meant to write...
Contact me if you need directions from the Western side of the Island.
There's a Google Earth placemark link in the page above, gives an idea where it is. Yep, not so easy to find, the turning off the main road is easy to miss. Must go again soon, seems like we have not eaten there for ages.
